Keystone Corner Lunch

Hi everyone! It’s been quite a while, life’s been busy and I’ve reviewed most of the local fry serving locations, so a lot of my newer reviews are going to be locations I find on travels that strike my fancy. That’s the focus of this latest review, a burger/fry joint local to the area we went camping a few weeks ago. So, how was it?

Address: 107 N Michael St, St Marys, PA 15857

Cut: Hand Cut

Thickness: 6/10

Crispiness: 4/10

Salt/Seasoning: Very light coarse grained salt, no seasoning.

Price: $4.99/serving.

So, these were served as pretty substantial fry baskets (it’s a bit more than the picture makes the serving look like). These were a hand cut fry style, with pretty standard thickness and crispiness (especially for the cut style, hand cut fries tend to be less crispy unless you do them yourselves, as to get the high crispiness you basically have to double fry them, and almost no restaurants double fry hand cut fries on-site). The fries were served with a very light amount of coarse grained salt, which did add to the flavor profile. The insides were almost perfect, just a very slight rubbery (not even rubbery, just slight lack of flaky insides), but this is about as good as you can get for this style of fry without a ton of extra work. The fries had a near complete lack of grease residue for fried hand-cut fries, this is honestly truly remarkable, even homemade hand-blotted fries tend to have more than this. Truthfully, these are probably the best fries I’ve ever had, this is my favorite style of fry, and the quality was outstanding, for a pretty good serving size as well. This is likely my #1 fry ever reviewed, a significant step above the Noon Mark Diner fries from NY. It’s kind of amazing that I found these in a small Pennsylvania town that was just a stop on the way to camping.

Noon Mark Diner

Hello! It’s been a long time since I’ve done one of these. I’ve basically cleared out most of the local areas of fries that I really wanted to review, and because of that I’ve been unsure how long it would be before I was inspired to write another review up, but on my latest vacation I found an area that did just that.

This is Noon Mark Diner in Keene NY, this diner clearly caters to tourists using the valley here as a staging ground for various outdoor activities (hiking, camping, which is what we were in the area for, general sightseeing, and other activities of that sort). We went here in the dead season (or as the waitress we talked to described it, the “mud season”, the time in-between outdoor winter and summer activities, and as such the diner wasn’t quite at full hours and capacity yet. All of that said, it was a very cozy, comfortable diner, and the experience was great. How about the fries though?

Address: 1770 NY-73 Scenic, Keene Valley, NY 12943

Cut: Hand Cut

Thickness: 7/10

Crispiness: 3/10

Salt/Seasoning: No salt, no seasoning

Price: $4.75/serving.

The first thing to note is that these are hand-cut fries, my personal favorite style. The fries were very well cooked through, no internal spongy texture, which is a relative rarity among this style of fries, and that means that the fries were at the very least well soaked prior to cutting/frying. The fries were served very warm, though not piping hot, likely due to the lack of employees working (due again, to this area being in the in-between season). Fries had visible skins, though there was little to no flavor/texture change in the areas with exposed skin. Also the fries had almost no excess grease, another common flaw in this style of french fry. These were fairly thick fries, and not particularly crispy, but there was no hint of sogginess or excessive moisture retention. The fries here are simply outstanding quality and among the best fries I’ve ever had. Too bad I don’t live up here. I’d go all the time. If you have the time and means to go out here, it’s worth it just for the scenery, but definitely check this place out if you find yourself in the New York Adirondacks.

Barb’s Cafe

Hi again and welcome to another french fry review! I’ve been delayed in getting this second review out from my camping vacation, but hopefully I’ll be able to get my few leftover reviews out soon. This one was right across the state border from the campgrounds we stayed several days out, but how was it?

Address: 633 Central Ave, Florence, WI 54121

Cut: Straight Cut

Thickness: 5.5/10

Crispiness: 2/10

Salt/Seasoning: Light Salt, no seasoning

Price: $3.29/serving.

So, these fries were served hot and fresh, with an average serving size (two servings pictured). Fries were lightly salted, with a very soft exterior, and a flaky interior. There were a few fries that had light bruises on the potato, but this did not affect taste or texture. The fries kind of had the feel of a lighter potato (a yellow potato perhaps, as opposed to the traditional brown, Russet french fry potato). But either way, the fries were tasty and very well cooked. This is the second time I went to this area while camping, first time was in 2019, and it’s still very good.

Grayling Restaurant

Hi guys and welcome to another fry review! This time, I’m going to be reviewing the first of two locations from my vacation at the end of last month. The first one was on the trip up, and is Grayling Restaurant, in Michigan. We stopped here to grab breakfast on the beginning of a long day of traveling to our campsite destination. So how was it?

Address: 211 Michigan Ave, Grayling, MI 49738

Cut: Straight Cut

Thickness: 4/10

Crispiness: 4.5/10

Salt/Seasoning: Light Salt, no seasoning

Price: $2.99/serving.

These fries came out very warm and fresh, with a very hot flaky interior. The fries had a slight hint of fast food style rough exterior texture, but not enough to affect anything outside of the exterior. Serving size was average to slightly below average, small plate of fries for each serving. Overall fries were very tasty, and clearly well cooked, if somewhat plain and pale colored. If you’re in the area, I would recommend, as the food was solid and I enjoyed the area/vibe.

Dad’s Coney’s and Wraps

Hi! Welcome back to a new Tyler’s fry review. For this review, I just went out and picked a local place near where I get all my shopping done. This is Dad’s Coney’s and Wraps, and while they specialize in just that, they also had fries for me to review. So, how were they?

Address: 128 Graceland Blvd, Columbus, OH 43214

Cut: Straight Cut

Thickness: 5/10

Crispiness: 3/10

Salt/Seasoning: Very light salt, visible paprika seasoning.

Price: $4.59/serving.

So, first off. I got these fries take out, almost all of my fries I review I don’t get takeout, unless it’s a true fast food place. This doesn’t exactly fit that, but there was almost no inside seating, so I went the takeout route. It was a pretty average serving size for the fries, perhaps a slight bit on the smaller side. Fries were very hot and fresh, with a durable exterior, a very nice exterior texture, and a flaky interior. The fries have visible paprika on them, but the taste was only noticeable on the most saturated fries. This meant that 80% or more of the fries had no seasoning taste at all, and the salt wasn’t enough to be noticeable either. Other than that, these fries were perfectly serviceable takeout fries, not special, but a solid french fry.

(I didn’t notice until I looked at the photo closely, but there’s one green tinted fry right up close and personal there. That’s unfortunate, especially because it makes the photo look bad, but IIRC it was the only one, and while green tinted potatoes don’t taste good, and aren’t good for you if you have enough, it’s not a particularly big thing having one.)

Cherry Street Diner

Hi guys, welcome back to another fry review! For this review I went to the far south of Columbus to a very small town, Ashville. This is the local diner in this town, Cherry Street Diner. I went here previously several years ago, but was too early in the morning to review the fries. So, after a long time between visits, it was time to finish what I started, and finally get those fries!

Address: 29 Cherry St, Ashville, OH 43103

Cut: Shoestring Cut

Thickness: 2.5/10

Crispiness: 5//10

Salt/Seasoning: Light salt, no seasoning.

Price: $3/serving (two pictured)

So, honestly as fry reviews go this is a pretty basic one. Fries were served very hot and fresh, with light salt and no seasoning. A shoestring cut, visually they’re pretty much McDonald’s fries on a plate. For a diner, at this price, that’s a good thing. Outsides were nice and crispy, with a soft inside. Serving size was very good for the price, just a very large pile of fries on a plate. Again, nothing unusual here, just ordinary shoestring fries cooked extremely hot and to order. Would highly recommend, as food was good and the area is out of the way and quite charming.

Ted’s Montana Grill

Hi guys, and welcome to another Tyler’s fry review! This time, I went to another location in the Easton shopping mall area, as the last location treated me pretty well, and I figured it would be a good idea to try for round two in the area, as before the last review, I had very limited exposure to the food in that area. So, how did this location, Ted’s Montana Grill turn out?

Address: Easton Gateway 4169, Worth Ave, Columbus, OH 43219

Cut: Straight Cut, hand-cut style.

Thickness: 4/10

Crispiness: 3.5/10

Salt/Seasoning: Very light salt/no seasoning.

Price: $5.50/serving

So, these fries were served lukewarm, but fresh (i.e. they were kind of room temperature, but no degradation of the potato from the presumed sitting out). Fries were a hand cut style, with very minimal residual grease leftover (as can be an issue with these fries). Serving size and price were in the normal range for fry sides. Texture was very pleasant on the interior, and the fries were clearly good potatoes, but the outside had a more questionable texture, and the fries were too plain to make up for the long sitting, and possible slight under-cooking. This is also noted in the fries having a very pale/dull color outside of the areas that had visible skins (the photos really don’t show this well, but it was clear when at the restaurant). Overall, the potatoes were good, but something was less than ideal in the cooking/preparation process, as these fries were some of the weaker fries I’ve had in the last year.

Flipside Burger

Hello! I’m excited to provide another fry review for you all! Last weekend, I went to Flipside Burger at Easton. I had never heard of the place before, but in my search for great fries, it came up as a place of interest. So, because of this, I went out and checked it out. How was it?

Address: 3945 Easton Station, Columbus, OH 43219

Cut: Straight Cut, hand-cut style.

Thickness: 3/10

Crispiness: 3.5/10

Salt/Seasoning: No salt, light herb seasoning.

Price: $5.29/serving (two servings in picture)

So, to open, these were hand cut style fries, with a relatively narrow cut, but not quite reaching the level of a shoestring cut. Fries were unsalted, with a light herb seasoning (Fry Wife says it may be parsley, but IDK, I’m not sophisticated enough to tell). Fries did have a little bit of grease soaked in, as is relatively commonplace among hand-cut fries, but not an unreasonable amount, nor enough to detract from the overall experience. Fries were served very warm and fresh, not quite piping hot (it was a busy evening after all, can’t really blame the kitchen for that). The seasoning and the fresh nature of the fries combined to provide a tasty overall fry, and it would definitely qualify as above average. A slight greasiness and maybe a slight sogginess would prevent this from being in the top tier of fries, but they are still very good, and I would recommend.

The Mercury Diner

Hi! Welcome to another fry review! I’ve had this one ready to go for a week or two now, but haven’t got to putting this up until now. A few weekends ago I went to try this relatively new diner, and it certainly looks new and fancy. But how were the fries?

Address: 621 Parsons Ave, Columbus, OH 43206

Cut: Shoestring

Thickness: 2/10

Crispiness: 4/10

Salt/Seasoning: Light salt, no seasoning. Salt is course grained.

Price: $5/serving (two servings in picture)

So, these fries were served warm and fresh. For a thinner cut fry there is not a lot of crispiness to them, the flaky interior is present though. The majority of the taste comes from the coarse grained salt used on the fries. The actual amount of salt is pretty small, but given the thin cut, with no additional augments to the flavor, means the salt dominates the flavor profile more than you’d expect from the amount used. The fries were clearly well cooked, with a good texture overall, but there really isn’t much potato flavor to the fries. These fries are solid, and I was definitely full by the end of my time here, but in this city you can get better fries for less money. Overall, definitely worth going to, though I probably won’t go again unless someone else really wants to go here.

Also, the decor. Place really doesn’t know what it wants to be. You’d think you’re going to a diner from the outside and the menu, but on the inside it looks like it’s trying to be upscale. I don’t quite get it. Then again, I’m probably not the target audience.

The Rail Burger

Hello! It’s been a while since the last time I’ve written up one of these. I had plans to write up some more reviews, but life got in the way. But no worries, I’m back! My newest fry review is of The Rail Burger, in Dublin. Apparently there’s several locations across Ohio, but I went to this location for a Valentine’s dinner with my wife. So, how was it?

Address: 5839 Frantz Rd, Dublin, OH 43016

Cut: Matchstick

Thickness: 1/10

Crispiness: 5/10

Salt/Seasoning: Light salt, no seasoning.

Price: $3.99/serving

First off, they have a choice of at least two types of fries, skinny fries and steak fries. I picked the skinny fries for review today, as I generally prefer a thinner cut to a thicker cut. These fries are about as thin a cut as you can make a french fry. It’s a shoestring cut, but really if anything deserves to be called a matchstick cut, it’s these fries. Fries were served warm and fresh, and I would consider the serving size average for the price. Flavor profile is slightly bland, this is practically inevitable with a cut this thin, and not having any seasoning, but the fries were clearly cooked well, they weren’t overly crisp, which can be a concern with very thin cut fries. Lightly salted, and kind of surprisingly, a little bit of skins present on the corners of the fries, though in this case it doesn’t readily affect the taste. Overall these were very good fries, even if the cut isn’t going to be for everyone.

Oddities Corner:

In addition to the fries, I tried their Housemade Tater Tots. First off, these aren’t really tater tots, not by any reasonable description of tater tots. These are shredded hash browns, molded into a large potato ball, and fried. It certainly is a different take, but these are really good. The outside is super crispy, but the interior is extremely soft and chewy, while still being well cooked. There is also a small amount of seasoning stuck inside, which really brings out an additional flavor profile. There was 4-5 tater tots, at a price of $7.99, so it’s definitely kind of pricey, but the taste is outstanding and the concept is pretty unique. I would definitely recommend these.
